“The Old Tower in the Fields” was a very nice experience to draw, in the way of connecting my pencil art technique and following the artist brush.
The composition of this landscape is visually harmonized, using the rule of third as guideline, dividing the artwork in three parts: the land with all the vegetation, then the darker side of the sky and the lighter side of the sky with the clouds and the moon ( the highlight of this image). Also there are two main elements arranged in the center part of the landscape: the old tower farther away and the woman a bit closer to the viewer, represented from the back, only a subtle silhouette.
He painted his works for the sake of that moment when, through devotion to the tiniest detail, the artist experiences a sense of total order: the very small and the omnipotently vast could only be grasped from one and the same standpoint. Deeply religious, Van Gogh believed that that point lay in God.
“Only he can be an artist who has a religion of his own, an original way of viewing the infinite.”
