Years ago, my wife and i visited the Native American cliff Dwellings at Mesa Verde, Colorado. Built 1100-1300AD, these very complex structures offered plenty of photographic opportunities. In particular, the sunken room 'kivas" were described at a museum adjacent to the cliff. These were used for ceremonial gatherings related to the Kachina Spirit that unified the relationships between Hopi Gods and man.
Recently, the idea of a semi abstract painting which emphasized the counterpoint shapes seen in the Kiva photographs, evolved into this design. It still needed something. My wife suggested that (lacking electricity) the Kiva ceremonies probably took place on moonlit nights. The bright rectangular shape (aforementioned Kachina Spirit) and the moonlit shadows finished the painting...
