"Thus passes the glory of the world". Although this phrase was originally uttered at the ordination of popes, warning them to leave worldly vocations behind, its meaning is now more general.
It came to mind when I saw David's huge painting in the Belvedere Palace in Vienna. Where is Napoleon and the glory of the ancients? How much glory is there in a conquest that claims the lives of millions?
Sadly, once again, this idea is becoming increasingly topical...
